When a slate roof leaks, the cause is often a few cracked slates, worn flashing or nails that have given out, and in that case it needs a repair, not a new roof. We take out the broken pieces and slip in matching slate, fastened with a copper or stainless hook or with a nail hidden under a copper bib. Nothing is face-nailed and no tar goes on the stone. Valleys and chimneys get copper flashing, which is meant to last as long as the slate.
