Leaks and repairs

Roof repair for Wyckoff homes

Leaves, limbs and shade give water plenty of ways into a roof. For roof repair in Wyckoff, we begin in the attic when we can get in, follow the stain to the spot where water gets through, then check that part of the roof from above. You see photos of what failed and of the finished repair.

Repairs we make on Wyckoff roofs:

  • Valley leaks where wet leaves hold water against the shingles
  • Shingles lifted by wind or punctured by falling branches
  • Step flashing, counter-flashing and crickets at chimneys
  • Skylight flashing, including skylights over cathedral ceilings
  • Split pipe boots, leaking vents and nail pops
  • Storm damage, tarped or patched to stop the water before the permanent repair

We use new metal and materials matched to what is on your roof, not just a bead of caulk. Each permanent repair on a Wyckoff roof carries a minimum 2-year workmanship warranty on the repaired area, in writing, and some repairs get a longer warranty, depending on the age and condition of the roof. Emergency tarps and temporary patches are not covered. If the roof as a whole is nearly worn out, we say so up front, before you spend money on a patch. See residential roofing for repairs and new roofs on homes.

A limb already through the roof? Start with emergency roof repair. For everything else, the roof repair page has the details.

Trees

The tree canopy is your roof’s biggest challenge

Wyckoff is one of the most heavily wooded towns we work in. That shows up on roofs in four ways:

  • Moss and algae. Shaded shingles stay damp. Moss lifts shingle edges and holds water against them. Do not power-wash it. That strips the granules. We can advise on gentle treatment and on algae-resistant shingles for the next roof.
  • Debris in valleys. Leaves and needles dam up valleys and send water sideways under the shingles.
  • Clogged gutters. Overflow rots fascia, and frozen gutters make ice dams worse. Six-inch gutters with 3x4-inch downspouts and a good guard make a real difference. See gutters.
  • Limb strikes. Storms bring down limbs all over Wyckoff, and even a small branch can puncture a shingle or crack a skylight. If a limb has hit your roof, have it checked even if nothing is leaking yet.

For wooded lots we often suggest impact-rated shingles, which are built to take falling debris better than standard ones. If a limb has already caused a leak, see how we handle roof repair in Bergen County.

Full replacement

Wyckoff roof replacement, built from the deck up

Plenty of Wyckoff homes sit under big roofs with hips, valleys, dormers and skylights, and every one of those details is a place where a skipped layer turns into a leak. A ProTech roof replacement begins with a tear-off down to the wood deck. Rotted boards and plywood are cut out and replaced with new wood, so the nails hold. On that deck we build the complete system, with no skipped layers:

  • Metal drip edge on each eave and rake, to keep water off the fascia
  • Ice and water barrier along the eaves, in every valley where leaves collect, and around each chimney, skylight and pipe
  • Then synthetic underlayment across the rest of the deck
  • Architectural shingles, fastened in the nailing pattern the manufacturer specifies
  • New step flashing, counter-flashing and pipe boots. We do not reuse worn-out flashing.
  • Soffit intake paired with a ridge vent, so the attic under a big roof can breathe

For roof replacement in Wyckoff, we install Owens Corning, GAF and other brands, including designer shingles. Your proposal names the exact product, color and warranty.

However big the roof, we strip and re-roof one section at a time, so your home is never open to the sky overnight. Once the last ridge cap is on, we clean out the gutters, run a magnet through the lawn and garden beds for nails, and review the finished job with you. Your new Wyckoff roof carries a minimum 15-year written workmanship warranty, longer depending on the roofing product, plus the manufacturer’s warranty on the materials. The roof replacement and shingle roofing pages go through each layer.

Low-slope and business roofs

Flat roofs and commercial roofing in Wyckoff

Porches, additions, dormers and garages often have a low-slope section where shingles do not belong. We repair and replace these flat roofs on Wyckoff homes with membranes made for low slopes, and we install Dec-Tec walkable membrane on leaking balconies and decks over garages. See flat roofing and balcony and deck waterproofing.

For the shops along Franklin Avenue and other business buildings in Wyckoff, we repair, maintain and replace EPDM, TPO, PVC and modified bitumen roofs. On commercial flat roofs, we also apply roof coatings. Each proposal comes in writing with photos of the roof, and your business stays open while we work. Replacements and recovers on business roofs carry a 5-year workmanship warranty, plus a manufacturer system warranty of 15 to 30 years where the roof qualifies, depending on the membrane and how it is installed. See commercial roofing.

  • Financing. Ask about the options for your project when you get your estimate.

Questions

Wyckoff roofing questions

There is moss on my roof. Do I need a new one?

Not always. Light moss on a roof with good life left in it can be treated. Thick moss that has lifted the shingle edges on a worn roof usually means a new roof is the smarter choice. We check the whole roof, take photos and tell you honestly which one you need.

Where do Wyckoff roofs usually leak?

Most often in valleys packed with wet leaves, at chimney and skylight flashing, around vents and pipe boots, and where wind or a falling branch has damaged shingles. We repair the spot where water actually enters, and each permanent repair carries a minimum 2-year workmanship warranty on the repaired area, in writing.

How do you replace a big roof with many hips and valleys?

One section at a time, and nothing is left open overnight. Everything comes off down to the wood deck, rotted boards and plywood are replaced, and every valley and eave is lined with ice and water barrier before the underlayment, shingles, new flashing and ridge vent go on. Residential replacements carry a minimum 15-year written workmanship warranty, longer depending on the roofing product, plus the manufacturer warranty on the materials.

A tree limb hit my roof. What should I do?

Stay off the roof and call (201) 881-2431. Our first job is to stop the water. Then we photograph the damage and write up the permanent repair. That written scope and those photos are what your insurance adjuster needs.

Do bigger gutters help on a wooded lot?

Usually, yes. Where Wyckoff trees drop a lot of leaves, we often suggest seamless 6-inch gutters with 3x4-inch downspouts. Gutter guards can go on with the new gutters, and we will tell you honestly whether your trees make them worth it.

Can you replace a skylight over a cathedral ceiling?

Yes. We replace skylights and repair skylight flashing, including units set in cathedral ceilings and additions. If the skylight itself is still sound, new flashing may be all it needs, and we will tell you which fix makes sense.

Which parts of Wyckoff do you cover?

All of Wyckoff, Sicomac included. We also work across Bergen County, in Franklin Lakes, Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Paramus and more.
