Gutters

Seamless gutter installation in North Jersey

4.9 stars on Google60+ reviewsFamily-owned12 years of roofing experience

Gutters have one job: get roof water away from your house. When they are undersized, clogged or pitched wrong, you get rotted fascia, wet basements and ice at the eaves. We install new seamless gutters that are sized and sloped for your roof.

Warning signs

Signs you need new gutters

  • Water pouring over the front edge in a normal rain
  • Gutters sagging or pulling away from the house
  • Peeling paint or soft, rotted wood on the fascia and soffit
  • Seams that drip no matter how often they are sealed
  • Rust, holes or cracks
  • Washed-out mulch, stained siding or water in the basement below a gutter run
  • Standing water in the gutter a day after rain, which means the pitch is wrong

Sizing

5-inch or 6-inch gutters?

OptionWhat it isWhen we recommend it
5-inch K-styleThe standard residential gutter, usually paired with 2x3-inch downspouts.Average-size roofs with simple rooflines.
6-inch K-styleHolds roughly 40 percent more water. Usually paired with 3x4-inch downspouts.Large or steep roofs, long runs, valleys that dump into one spot, and homes under heavy tree cover.
Half-roundA rounded, traditional profile.Older and historic homes where the look matters.
CopperLong-lasting and handsome as it ages.Slate roofs and period homes.

Bigger downspouts clog far less often than bigger gutters alone. On tree-covered lots, 3x4-inch downspouts are the single best upgrade.

Installation

How we install gutters

  • Seamless runs. Aluminum gutter is formed to the exact length of each run, so the only joints are at corners and outlets.
  • Fascia first. We check the wood behind the old gutter. Rotted fascia gets replaced, because a gutter is only as strong as what it is screwed into.
  • Hidden hangers screwed into the fascia at close spacing, so the gutter stands up to snow and ice.
  • Correct pitch toward each downspout so water does not sit.
  • Drip edge and gutter apron so water runs into the gutter, not behind it.
  • Downspouts that discharge away from the foundation, with extensions or ties into existing drain lines.

Replacing gutters on a New Jersey home does not need a construction permit. The state treats it as ordinary maintenance.

Trees

Gutters under North Jersey trees

Towns like Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes, Ridgewood and Glen Rock are heavily wooded. Oaks and maples fill gutters in the fall, and seed pods and pollen strings do it again in spring. A clogged gutter overflows at the fascia in summer and freezes solid in winter.

What helps: 6-inch gutters with 3x4-inch downspouts, a cleaning in late fall and late spring, and a quality gutter guard where trees hang over the roof. No guard is maintenance-free, but a good one turns four cleanings a year into one.

Gutters do not cause ice dams. Those come from heat escaping into the attic and melting snow. But a gutter full of frozen leaves makes them worse, and the weight can tear a weakly fastened gutter off the house.

Questions

Gutter questions

Should I replace gutters when I replace the roof?

If they are in good shape, no. We can work around them. If they are old, undersized or pulling away, doing both together saves a second set-up and lets us install the drip edge and gutter apron as one system.

What colors are available?

Aluminum gutter coil comes in a wide range of baked-on colors. Most people match the trim or fascia so the gutters disappear.

How long do aluminum gutters last?

Twenty years or more when they are fastened well and kept clean. Copper lasts much longer.

Do you install gutter guards?

Yes, along with new gutters. We will tell you honestly whether your trees make them worth it.

Gutters overflowing or falling off?

We will measure, check the fascia and price new seamless gutters in writing.
